ANCESTORS, 1984 - 1998

The Ancestors series consists of photographic portraits of ceramic dolls resembling the artist's grandparents as kids. All dolls were sculpted by the artist after family album photographs in 1984 at age 14.

The attempt to re-create her grandparents as innocent children from pre-war times can be interpreted as part of an unconscious idealization and repression process. It avoids the confrontation with the possiblity of the relatives' involvement in questionable activities in Nazi Germany, and thus "keeps them free" from responsibility and guilt.
