SYSTEMS, 2013 - 15

The systems series investigates complex ecosystems. Subjects include decaying trees and forest scenes. Expansive scenes are photographed in sections, digitally collaged to large panoramas, printed, and then selectively painted in the studio.

The photographic collage strategy mimics our visual--and also our scientific--process of focusing and re-focusing on a myriad of details which are then merged into a seemlngly continuous image. Monochrome gouache is used to block out sections or to isolate areas of focus. While the whole is made more readable through this intervention, it is altered, loses information, and is superimposed by a second system, that of painting.
