WHO BY FIRE, 2002 - 2003
Who By Fire is a series of monochrome watercolors based on images from archives and the media, as well as images taken by the artist.
The series looks at contemporary society’s attitude towards life and death. It questions the moral and ethical decisions and emotions which lie behind our use of technology, be it to save lives or to kill. Premature babies in incubators are shown clinging to life. Animals from childhood stories––the rabbit, the bird, or the wolf––are depicted dead, casualties of unknown circumstances. The bare, thin winter trees act as reminders of our roots in the series, our connection with the earth and its own rhythms.
